The Oregon Ducks are entering the 2026 college football season as one of the leading favorites to claim a national championship title — and head coach Dan Lanning feels it.
Lanning has led Oregon to at least 10 wins in each of his four seasons since taking over in Eugene prior to the 2022 season. Last year, the Ducks played their way to the College Football Playoff semifinal — where they fell to the eventual-champion Indiana Hoosiers with a 56-22 final score.
During a recent conversation with college football reporter Wilson Alexander of On3 Sports, Lanning said Oregon is "close" to reaching national championship glory.

"It takes time. It’s hard. It’s hard to build," Lanning said. "There’s, what, four active coaches that have won national championships? We’re close."
Oregon beat every opponent it faced last year, except Curt Cignetti's Indiana squad that notched a flawless 16-0 record en route to their championship victory. In addition to their College Football Playoff semifinal loss to the Hoosiers, the Ducks also fell in their regular-season matchup against Indiana at Autzen Stadium.

Lanning and the Ducks will open up their 2026 schedule with a matchup against the Boise State Broncos on Sept. 5. The following week, they'll travel to Oklahoma State for a matchup against the Cowboys.
Oregon's first Big Ten matchup will take place against the USC Trojans on Sept. 26.
