Star college quarterback Sam Leavitt is no stranger to scrambling with the football, and he might very well be running away from his Arizona State team to head to the transfer portal.

The Sun Devils held their annual celebration dinner to honor the team and staff for the year, and every captain for Arizona State was in attendance except for its quarterback, who led them to the College Football Playoff in 2024.

This comes amid rumors that the signal-caller could transfer this offseason in hopes of upping his draft stock in 2027. Leavitt, who entered the year projected as a first-round pick by multiple draft pundits, had a slow start to the year before heating up and ultimately getting derailed by a season-ending foot injury against Baylor.

When prompted to talk about his quarterback’s absence from the evening’s events, head coach Kenny Dillingham held no punches back for what could be his soon-to-be former protege. He wished Leavitt well in whatever future path he decides to take, as the transfer portal is soon to open at the top of the calendar year.

Since coming to Arizona State from Oregon as the offensive coordinator under Dan Lanning, Dillingham has completely changed the school’s outlook. He became the first Arizona State alumnus to serve as head coach of his alma mater and, following a down year in 2023, has helped the Sun Devils become a force in the new-look Big 12 Conference.

It would not be the first time Leavitt has transferred, as he began his college career as a Michigan State Spartan before moving to the desert before the 2024 season. As a Sun Devil, Leavitt scored 46 total touchdowns while leading the team to a 16-4 record as their starter under center.

If reports are true that Levitt will enter the portal, he will have several top suitors, including Miami, LSU, and Indiana, all of which are set to lose their starting quarterbacks this offseason.

With a strong 2026 season, Leavitt could position himself to be a potential first-round pick in the 2027 draft, though he'll have plenty of competition from Ohio State QB Julian Sayin, Texas QB Arch Manning, Nebraska QB Dylan Raiola, and Florida's DJ Lagway.
