After a 12–2 season that saw Georgia repeat as SEC champions and earn a No. 3 seed in the College Football Playoff, the Bulldogs’ run ended in a gut-punch 39–34 loss to Ole Miss in the Sugar Bowl quarterfinals, with a late field goal denying a return trip to the semifinals.
More than anything, the game underscored college football’s evolving competitive landscape, where even historically elite programs like Georgia can be undone by a single clutch moment and a handful of late breakdowns.
With the disappointment of CFP elimination behind them, Georgia pivoted to the transfer portal, where head coach Kirby Smart and his staff are targeting talent capable of pushing the program back toward national title contention.

On Thursday, Georgia confirmed the commitment of Auburn transfer defensive lineman Amaris Williams, landing one of the more intriguing defensive prospects available in this portal cycle.
Williams, listed at 6-2 and 260 pounds, was a highly regarded recruit out of Clinton High School in North Carolina, earning five-star status and All-American honors before flipping his commitment from Florida to Auburn in the 2024 class.
Over two seasons with the Tigers (2024–25), Williams appeared in 21 games as a rotational edge defender but posted relatively modest production, recording six total tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, and 0.5 sacks in 2024, followed by 14 total tackles, six tackles for loss, and two sacks in 2025.
Even so, his athletic profile, SEC experience, and developmental upside made him a sought-after option for programs seeking added depth and potential off the edge.

The portal window has brought significant movement around the Georgia program.
While Williams represents a gain on the defensive front, the Bulldogs have also experienced notable departures, with several defensive backs and rotational contributors exploring new opportunities, and key players such as defensive tackle Christen Miller and linebacker CJ Allen already declaring for the 2026 NFL Draft.
Georgia has routinely turned defensive front players into NFL draft picks under Smart, including Philadelphia Eagles standouts Jordan Davis and Jalen Carter, along with Green Bay Packers defensive lineman Devonte Wyatt and Jacksonville Jaguars edge rusher Travon Walker, among others.
While Williams has yet to reach that level of production, Georgia’s environment and coaching staff have a long track record of maximizing the raw athletic potential of defensive front players.
