Mississippi State's season has taken another devastating turn, with the Bulldogs reportedly losing star quarterback Kamario Taylor for the remainder of the year.

According to ESPN's Pete Thamel, Taylor will miss the rest of the 2026 season because of a toe injury that is expected to require surgery. The sophomore quarterback is expected to make a full recovery, but the news brings an abrupt end to what began as a promising breakout campaign.

Taylor emerged as one of college football's most exciting quarterbacks early in the season, helping Mississippi State open with four consecutive victories.

His impressive performances even generated early Heisman Trophy consideration before injuries derailed his momentum.

Through seven games, Taylor completed 65.4% of his passes for 1,460 yards, 17 touchdowns and four interceptions. He also contributed 147 rushing yards and another touchdown. However, the quarterback's season began unraveling after suffering a foot injury during Mississippi State's victory over Missouri on Sept. 26.

Taylor attempted to play through the injury against Alabama but was visibly limited before missing the Bulldogs' matchup with LSU.

He returned against Oklahoma on Saturday, hoping to provide a spark for a Mississippi State team struggling to regain its early-season momentum.

Unfortunately, his comeback lasted less than one quarter.

Taylor completed just two of five passes for 10 yards before aggravating the injury while scrambling. He was subsequently ruled out and watched the remainder of the contest wearing a protective boot.

Mississippi State ultimately suffered a 23-15 defeat, extending its losing streak to three games.

The Bulldogs now face the difficult challenge of finishing their season without the quarterback who helped fuel their undefeated start.

Backup Billy Puckett has already seen significant playing time in Taylor's absence, including appearances against LSU and Oklahoma.

Head coach Jeff Lebby has also identified Appalachian State transfer AJ Swann as an option at quarterback.

With a matchup against No. 11 Texas approaching Saturday, Mississippi State must quickly adjust its offensive plans.

Taylor's injury represents a significant setback for a program that appeared to be building momentum during the opening month of the season.

While the expectation of a full recovery offers encouragement for the quarterback's future, the Bulldogs must now navigate the remainder of 2026 without one of their most important players.
