NC State seems very interested in having Philip Rivers as its next head coach.

Per On3's Pete Nakos, Rivers, a former NC State quarterback, will meet with the Wolfpack in Fairhope, Alabama, about the head coaching vacancy. Rivers was named one of the candidates to replace Dave Doeren, who was fired after the team lost to Stanford in October.

Nakos and On3's Chris Low reported that Rivers has started making preliminary phone calls to build out a front office and coaching staff. He is currently the head coach at St. Michael Catholic High School in Alabama.

NC State Philip Rivers

...

Rivers' son, Gunner, committed to play for the Wolfpack in February, so it would make sense for the former NFL quarterback to join NC State and continue coaching his son.

Philip Rivers Responds to NC State Reports

"I mean, shoot, NC State's special to me," Rivers told Al.com last month. "And you know, Coach Doeren, shoot, what he did over 14 years, and all-time winningest coach, [there's] a ton of respect and appreciation, you know, for how he went about it with the university. There's nothing there at this point.

"Like I told you earlier in the week, you understand the chatter is out there. Gotta take it one day at a time, you know, is all I know. I'm excited [for] this postseason with these guys here, and I guess it's like I told you last year, you never say never, but there's nothing imminent."

Rivers, who spent 18 seasons in the NFL, played for NC State from 2000-03. He was named ACC Rookie of the Year in 2000, ACC Player of the Year in 2003, and ACC Athlete of the Year in 2004. In four seasons with the Wolfpack, Rivers threw for 12,484 yards and 95 touchdowns.
