It's the season of the College Football Playoffs (CFP), and on Wednesday, Dec. 31, the No. 2 seed Ohio State Buckeyes will appear in the Cotton Bowl against the No. 10 seed Miami Hurricanes at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, for the quarterfinal matchup.
One of the benefits for players on teams as strong as Ohio State is that being part of a successful legacy program is a positive when it comes to getting in the NFL.
But, one of the downsides of being part of a top college football program is that competition is stiff. So, if a player isn't getting much, or any, playing time, they have the option to enter the transfer portal and go to a school where they can be a starter.

That's the case with one Ohio State quarterback. Backup signal-caller Lincoln Kienholz isn't likely to get much playing time during the Buckeyes' run in the CFP this season, and he's a candidate to enter the transfer portal when it's available to enter on Jan. 2. Even though being with a school as strong as Ohio State comes with bragging rights, he needs more playing time to catch the attention of the NFL.

On Monday, Dec. 29, Kienholz was asked by the media about the possibility of his entering the transfer portal. He was candid about it and made it sound as if it's a real possibility.
"I've definitely had conversations. I'm not 100% sure, but my goal is to go to the NFL, and in order to do that, you gotta play," he said, according to a report from Ohio State football beat writer Dan Hope of Eleven Warriors. "So I've had conversations with Coach Day and also with Coach Fessler a little bit about it."

Kienholz moving on simply makes sense if his goal is to get to the NFL. Ohio State lead quarterback Julian Sayin will be returning to head up the Buckeyes next season, and with Kienholz's eligibility running out soon, he'll have to play at another school to get starting time. It shouldn't surprise anyone if Kienholz moves on after this season.
