The college football world was shaken Sunday evening when Deion Sanders announced that Colorado Buffaloes quarterback Dominiq Ponder passed away in a single-car accident. He was 23.
“God, please comfort the entire Ponder family during this difficult time,” Sanders said in a statement. “Dominiq was one of my favorites because of his passion, his heart and his willingness to go beyond what was asked. He will certainly be remembered, missed and remain in our thoughts and prayers.”
Ponder transferred from Bethune-Cookman and spent the past two seasons in Boulder under Sanders, working to earn a larger opportunity heading into what would have been his third year with the program.

While the news remains fresh and deeply shocking to the many lives Ponder touched, his former teammate during the 2024 season — and then-starting Colorado quarterback — Shedeur Sanders shared his reaction. Sanders, who recently completed his rookie season with the Cleveland Browns, posted a brief three-word message on social media following Ponder’s death.
“Hurt about this,” Shedeur wrote on his Instagram story, adding a heartbreak emoji.

While Ponder never received a significant opportunity on the field for the Colorado Buffaloes, his impact on his coaches and teammates extended far beyond game day — something Colorado athletic director Fernando Lovo made clear in a statement.
“The entire CU Athletics family is devastated by the tragic passing of Dominiq Ponder,” Lovo said. “He epitomized the values of passion, enthusiasm, leadership, toughness and intelligence that were revered by his teammates and coaches alike. Our hearts go out to his family and all of his teammates during this difficult time.”
