North Carolina quarterback Bryce Baker plans to enter the NCAA transfer portal following his freshman season with the Tar Heels in 2025, according to On3 Sports.

Baker committed to Bill Belichick and the North Carolina program as a four-star recruit in the 2025 class, but never saw any action on the field during his debut collegiate campaign in Chapel Hill.

Baker, a highly-touted North Carolina native, served as a backup QB option behind starter Gio Lopez. The majority of primary backup work went to Max Johnson, who entered the transfer portal with one season of remaining eligibility earlier this month.

Baker's decision to enter the transfer portal comes just hours after Belichick's reported decision to hire former Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino as the Tar Heels' new offensive coordinator.

Baker was the nation's No. 8 quarterback recruit in the 2025 class, according to 247 Sports' Composite rankings. In his senior season at East Forsyth High School, he threw for 3,523 yards, 40 touchdowns and just five interceptions, while also rushing for 303 yards and six touchdowns on the ground.

"Their experience in the NFL is huge," Baker said after his commitment to UNC before the 2025 season. "They've been on the level that I'm trying to get to. I feel like that separates them from a lot of other schools. They want to develop me, and they know the intricacies that will help me get to my goals. I feel like [Belichick] will bring in the right pieces to build around me. They're going to make me a priority."
