There are many people who play an important role in the San Francisco 49ers being a first-class organization.
General manager John Lynch, head coach Kyle Shanahan, and quarterback Brock Purdy are the most well-known, but there’s one who doesn’t get near as much credit as he should: executive vice president of football operations Paraag Marathe.
Marathe has a lot of jobs, but perhaps the most important is his work with the team’s salary cap. Marathe has a reputation as a bit of a cap magician, often structuring deals and creating flexibility for San Francisco to keep and extend some of its top stars.

But according to Puck’s John Ourand, there’s a chance the 49ers could lose Marathe at some point in the near future.
“Sources: I'm told that the MLS Commissioner search has narrowed to three execs who could replace Don Garber: * LAFC co-owner and former PE exec Larry Berg, * Veteran media exec David Nathanson, * Senior exec with the 49ers Paraag Marathe. A new MLS commissioner is expected to be announced next month,” Ourand posted on X.

Losing Marathe would be a big blow for the 49ers, especially right before the start or the 2026 season. He’s been with the organization for over 25 years.
In addition to his role with the 49ers, Marathe is also the chairman of Premier League club Leeds United. So if he were to land the gig, he wouldn’t be completely foreign to Major League Soccer.
