Brandon Aiyuk is taking the required steps toward his attempted return to the NFL.

This first step of his return is filing for reinstatement from the San Francisco 49ers, who placed him on the reserve/left squad list last year. Aiyuk filed that paperwork on Wednesday, according to his recently-hired agent, Drew Rosenhaus.

Aiyuk, who hasn't played in an NFL game since suffering a torn ACL/MCL in October 2024, plans to report to the team's training facility on Friday.

When asked about this recent development on Wednesday, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan delivered a blunt response.

“None. I have no expectation. I’ve kind of moved on with that mentally," Shanahan replied.

Shanahan continues to make it clear that the team has no interest in welcoming Aiyuk back, despite several key wide receiver injuries to open up their 2026 NFL campaign. With that in mind, the 49ers can either reinstate him with the intentions to trade him before next week's deadline, or simply release him.

The 49ers are 6-1 to begin the 2026 season, suffering their only loss of the year to the Atlanta Falcons in Week 7. The team, coming off its Week 8 bye, is now gearing up for a Week 9 matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday.
