Jimmy Garoppolo is open to resuming his NFL career, and a team in need of a veteran quarterback could come calling.
Bleacher Report's Kristopher Knox floated an idea that makes way too much sense for Garoppolo and another team in the near future. That's a reunion with the New England Patriots, the team that selected Garoppolo in the second round of the 2014 draft.
New England did that when Tom Brady was still at the height of his career, and the Patriots soon traded Garoppolo to the San Francisco 49ers. Garoppolo had success there as a starter before his career faded with the Las Vegas Raiders and Los Angeles Rams.

The former Eastern Illinois star is 34, and he still has something left. New England has a cemented starter in quarterback Drake Maye, fresh off a Super Bowl appearance, but, as Knox pointed out, the Patriots don't have a great plan among their backup quarterbacks.

...
Tommy DeVito has a 3-5 record as a starter with a 65.3% completion rate for 1,358 yards and eight touchdowns versus three interceptions with the New York Giants. That doesn't inspire confidence that he could take the Patriots far if Maye sustained a long-term or season-ending injury.
Morton is a rookie after being taken in the seventh round of this year's draft. He was highly successful at Texas Tech with 8,989 yards passing for 71 touchdowns in his career, which included a College Football Playoff appearance.
That said, Morton isn't the greatest former Red Raiders quarterback, as that title belongs to Kansas City Chiefs superstar Patrick Mahomes. The weight of New England's season falling on Morton's shoulders would not be the best thing in Foxboro if Maye is unavailable.
Garoppolo easily dwarfs those numbers with a career 67.4% completion rate for 15,828 yards and 96 touchdowns versus 52 picks. He led the 49ers to the Super Bowl in the 2019 season, and he has a career record of 43-21 in the regular season and 4-2 in the playoffs.
“Adding Garoppolo would give New England a much more reliable backup option,” Knox wrote. “While Garoppolo only started two games during his time with the Patriots, he spent three seasons with the franchise and three years under offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, who returned to New England last offseason.”
“McDaniels and Garoppolo were also together during the 2023 season with the Las Vegas Raiders,” Knox added.
That's a high level of familiarity, and it would behoove the Patriots to sign Garoppolo before another team has a quarterback need to come up during training camp or the preseason.
