When Cleveland Browns head coach named Deshaun Watson the team’s starting quarterback weeks ago, it shocked many because it came on the heels of Watson ripping into Browns fans for the way they’ve treated him when playing at home.

“Last time I played on this field, I tore my Achilles, and that same fan base cheered when I got hurt,” Watson said. “So, what does that have to do with anything about performance? When a person gets hurt, especially in their own city, and they cheer.

“… It’s a mental battle every day. I feel like I get more love on road games than I do home games. So if it is my spot and he does make me the starter, maybe it’s 17 away games then. I don’t know.”

Monken has since defended Watson’s remarks while the QB himself said he let his emotions simply get the best of him.

However, not everyone had just moved on from what Watson said. In fact, many are still upset over the controversial signal-caller victimizing himself — and former San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith unleashed on Watson over his recent behavior.

“I just didn’t understand — it’s so delusional, like how out of touch do you have to be if you’re Deshaun?” Smith said on ESPN's "Sunday NFL Countdown." “Like, what have you done to give this fan base to cheer for? Honestly, this is going to go down as one of the worst trades in the history of football, one of the worst contracts in the history of football. You have been completely unavailable, and when you have been on the field, it’s been terrible.

“I’ve been on bad teams, I know what it’s like to look forward to road games, but to sit and whine about it at the microphone when you still have the highest guaranteed contract in the history of football…it’s so out of touch. I don’t get the whining — no one wants to hear it. Go give them something to cheer about.”

Watson may be on a short leash with Shedeur Sanders waiting in the wings.

During Sunday’s season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars, Watson completed 4 of 8 passes for just 29 yards and an interception. He had a 19.3 passer rating and was also sacked twice.
