The Denver Broncos have made a significant move, adding a new addition to their front office. The team announced they are hiring former Stanford head coach David Shaw as a senior personnel executive. Broncos general manager George Paton brought in Shaw, who will now help to evaluate college and professional talent.

Shaw had interviewed for the head coach position with the Broncos in 2023 before the team decided to move forward with Sean Payton. Shaw had apparently kept in touch with Paton, who has now decided to bring him on as part of the front office.

Shaw is no stranger to the NFL, as he spent a decade as an assistant coach with several teams like the then-Oakland Raiders, Philadelphia Eagles, and Baltimore Ravens. After stepping down from the head coach position at Stanford, Shaw was angling to return to the NFL in some capacity, even interviewing for the Los Angeles Chargers' and Tennessee Titans' head coach positions this offseason.

Shaw was a well-respected coach at the collegiate level, serving in the role of head coach for Stanford between the 2011 and 2022 seasons. During his time with the school, he racked up four Pac-12 Coach of the Year honors, a 2017 Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year honor, and is the winningest coach in Stanford's history since stepping down after 2022.

Despite not landing a head coaching position with the NFL, Shaw might now be able to work his way up the ranks in personnel, and might eventually end up serving in a general manager role if his impact is felt by the Broncos organization.

What will be interesting is how the Broncos plan to approach the 2024 season without a true starting quarterback. The team did draft Oregon's Bo Nix with the No. 12 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, but Payton has yet to name a starting quarterback.

It is still early on in the offseason to select a starting quarterback, but the Broncos don't have the best situation at the quarterback position. Nix is an unproven rookie, Zach Wilson was a mess when he played for the New York Jets, and Jarrett Stidham is a decent journeyman option.

One of the most important moves that Paton and Shaw can make is to see about signing another veteran should Nix not work out or be hurt. Former Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill could be a viable option. Either way, Shaw is likely going to be getting to work immediately, as the Broncos are set to report to training camp on July 23.
