The Kansas City Chiefs drafted Josh Simmons in the first round of the 2025 draft to be their starting left tackle for the next decade.

But Simmons may flame out in Kansas City before he even finishes his second season in the NFL.

The 23-year-old tackle reportedly got into a heated dispute with head coach Andy Reid before Sunday’s game against the Seattle Seahawks. Both Reid and quarterback Patrick Mahomes advised him to leave the team meeting, and he was placed on injured reserve the following day because of a lingering back issue.

Kansas City Chiefs OT Josh Simmons

...

“Simmons was sitting with his feet up in the offense's meeting room when Reid asked him to put his feet down, according to multiple sources who witnessed the interaction,” NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo reported. “Simmons pushed back by telling Reid he had to sit that way because his back and hips were aching, according to sources. Reid instructed Simmons to get treatment from the athletic trainers if he was indeed in pain.

“The exchange continued and disrupted the meeting, sources said, until Mahomes echoed Reid's sentiment for Simmons to leave the room and go get treatment. A perturbed Simmons left the room but did not leave the building.”

Perhaps even more concerning than Simmons’ outburst is the fact that he’s missed 15 of 23 games since he was drafted 32nd overall two seasons ago.

In fact, things are so up in the air right now that Rapoport stated he believes Simmons has played his last down for the Chiefs.

“There are a lot of questions about Josh Simmons, who is as talented a left tackle as you could possibly get,” Rapoport told ESPN’s Peter Schrager. “He is a stud as a player. I don’t know if he plays for the Chiefs again.

“I don’t know when he plays for the Chiefs again. There’s nothing more important than protecting Patrick Mahomes. You have to believe in the person doing it, and until that happens, I don’t know that he’s out there.”

In Simmons’ absence, undrafted free agent Kahlil Benson has stepped into the starting left tackle spot. He’s played brilliantly, allowing just 16 pressures and eight hurries on 374 offensive snaps without allowing a sack across six games, according to Pro Football Focus.
