The Kansas City Chiefs are 5-2, but quarterback Patrick Mahomes has been running out of people to throw to.

In their loss to the Seattle Seahawks, the Chiefs’ wide receivers combined for six catches and 39 yards. Even with Rashee Rice (seven catches, 53 yards, one touchdown) back against the Denver Broncos last week, the rest of the group managed just six catches for 37 yards.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter has reported that the Chiefs are looking for a receiver, and with the Nov. 10 trade deadline fast approaching, a familiar name has entered the mix.

According to Sports Illustrated’s Gilberto Manzano and Matt Verderame, a source close to the situation said Kansas City is willing to move premium draft capital for the right receiver, and the Chiefs don’t see their limited cap space (less than $2 million) as an obstacle.

Colts wideout Josh Downs is considered the likeliest target, but SI singled out Washington Commanders receiver Stefon Diggs as one to watch.

Washington Commanders WR Stefon Diggs

“One to watch is Stefon Diggs, who the Chiefs monitored this offseason before he signed a one-year deal with the Commanders,” Manzano and Verderame wrote. “Should Washington decide to sell, Diggs, 33, would make sense as a low-cost acquisition in terms of draft capital (Day 3 pick) and money left to pay out (less than $3 million).”

It wouldn’t be the first time the Chiefs kicked the tires on Diggs. Kansas City reached out to him this offseason before the Maryland native signed a one-year deal worth up to $12 million with his hometown Commanders.

The four-time Pro Bowler has been productive in D.C., catching 27 passes for 252 yards and a team-high five touchdowns in six games. He’s just one year removed from an 85-catch, 1,000-yard season with the New England Patriots too.

However, a deal may not be so simple.

Washington lost Pro Bowl receiver Terry McLaurin for the season to a torn patellar tendon on Oct. 19, which leaves the 32-year-old Diggs as Jayden Daniels’ top target. The Commanders are also coming off a 27-10 win over the division rival Philadelphia Eagles.

Still, a loss to the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday could push Washington toward trading veterans on one-year deals for draft picks — and for a Day 3 pick, Diggs would be the cheapest upgrade on the market for a Super Bowl contender like Kansas City.
