The Kansas City Chiefs haven't had a 1,000-yard rusher since rookie Kareem Hunt led the league in rushing in 2017. Things may have hit rock bottom last season, when Hunt and Pacheco failed to combine for 1,000 rushing yards.

Andy Reid's team averaged 106.6 rushing yards per game, 25th in the league. As such, bolstering the running attack is one of GM Brett Veach's offseason priorities.

The Chiefs are reportedly interested in Notre Dame star Jeremiyah Love. However, with him likely gone by the time they're on the clock at No. 9, they will have to pivot to free agency.

According to CBS Sports insider Jonathan Jones, they kept tabs on Seattle Seahawks star Kenneth Walker III. Unfortunately, his price tag might be a little too rich for them:

"The Chiefs appear ready to strike at the running back position this month," Jones wrote. "They don't think Jeremiyah Love will fall to them at No. 9 (...) so Kansas City won't wait until the draft. The Chiefs may not be in the mix for a top-of-market player like Kenneth Walker III, but a player in that $8 million per year area could be one for them."

The reigning Super Bowl MVP may reportedly get a deal in the $13 million-a-year range. As good a player as he is, there might be plenty of recency bias here after watching him put up 135 yards from scrimmage in the Super Bowl.

The Chiefs may have to settle for other options, with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Clemson star Travis Etienne as a more feasible option.

Star quarterback Patrick Mahomes is aiming to be back on the field for Week 1, and the front office needs to operate as such as if that's going to be the case. They missed the playoffs for the first time since he entered the league, and they need to improve Mahomes' supporting cast to get back to the mountaintop.

The Chiefs currently have $24.8 million in available cap space, according to Over The Cap, but with several issues to address, they may not want to commit that much money into a running back. As such, Walker will gauge plenty of interest from teams with more financial flexibility.
