Kansas Governor Laura Kelly is preparing to make a "special announcement" on Monday following the state's highly-anticipated meeting with the Kansas City Chiefs, according to a report from The Kansas City Star.

This upcoming "special announcement" follows last week's report that the Chiefs and the state of Kansas have been in negotiations regarding a multi-billion dollar domed stadium project capable of hosting major events like the Super Bowl. The potential agreement would see the organization leave its longtime Missouri home at Arrowhead Stadium.

Chiefs owner Clark Hunt and other high-profile Kansas City executives are reportedly attending Monday's meeting with the Kansas Legislative Coordinating Council.

Missouri is continuing its attempts to keep the Chiefs in state, but Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas seems to be preparing for the possibility of the team moving across the border into Kansas.

“Kansas City, the State of Missouri, and the new executive team at Jackson County have continued negotiations with our teams through this week,” Lucas said, via the KC Star. “Kansas City and its partners have made compelling but responsible offers north of $1.5 billion with identifiable and backed sources of funds to maintain the legacy of Arrowhead Stadium while updating its facilities to remain among the finest in the National Football League and in the world.”

“Any decision to depart from such a legacy home would have no reflection on the outstanding people of Kansas City and Jackson County who for fifty years have given their passion, energy, and public investment into building the Chiefs into one of America’s finest sports brands,” Lucas continued. “We’ll reserve further comment until we hear from the Kansas City Chiefs.”

The 2025 Chiefs were eliminated from playoff contention with last week's loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, which also saw superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes suffer a season-ending torn ACL.

The 6-9 Chiefs will face off against the division-rival Denver Broncos in a Christmas Day matchup on Thursday.
