The Kansas City Chiefs entered Sunday’s matchup against the Denver Broncos with a must-win mindset as they tried to chip away at Denver’s firm lead atop the AFC West.

Despite briefly taking the lead in the fourth quarter, Kansas City couldn’t close it out. Broncos quarterback Bo Nix led a poised final drive to set up kicker Will Lutz for a game-winning field goal as time expired, sealing a 22–19 win that pushed Denver to 9–2 and dropped the Chiefs to 5–5.

One of the few bright spots for Kansas City was tight end Travis Kelce, who led the team with nine catches for 91 yards and a 21-yard touchdown — a historic one at that. The score marked his 84th career touchdown, passing franchise legend Priest Holmes for the most in Chiefs history.

Kelce declined to speak with reporters afterward, saying he had no interest in discussing personal milestones following a loss. But Patrick Mahomes made sure the moment didn’t go unrecognized.

“He deserves it. The work he puts in every day,” Mahomes said postgame via Charles Goldman. “It speaks to the person he is to go out there and break that record… It came at a big moment in the game, and that’s usually when he makes those plays.”

Travis Kelce, now 36, decided after Super Bowl LIX that he wasn’t ready to walk away, opting to return for his 13th NFL season despite speculation that he was leaning toward retirement.

He’s in the final year of his contract with Kansas City, but he’s made it clear he has no interest in playing anywhere else. And frankly, it’s hard to imagine a scenario where the Chiefs wouldn’t bring him back if he chooses to play another season.

While his production isn’t quite what it was at his peak, Kelce has still been one of the best tight ends in the NFL this year. He’s recorded 50 receptions for 631 yards and four touchdowns, putting him on pace to finish with numbers well above last season, when he set career lows in multiple categories.
