One of the biggest conversations surrounding the Kansas City Chiefs this season is kicker Harrison Butker's struggles.

He's missed six field goals and one extra point so far this season. For one of the highest paid kickers in NFL history, these misses are inexcusable.

Except for the fact that the Chiefs coaching staff keeps excusing the misses.

Kansas City coach Andy Reid continues to defend the kicker, despite the team going and signing Justin Tucker in a very controversial move. In early 2025, 16 women alleged that Tucker engaged in sexual misconduct during and after massage sessions with them, the Baltimore Banner reported at the time. He was released by the Baltimore Ravens ahead of last season and hasn't competed for a team since.

Even though the team added another starting kicker option, the Chiefs still plan to play Butker moving forward. Special teams coordinator Dave Toub spoke with reporters on Thursday to reiterate the confidence the Chiefs have in Butker.

"Butker is our kicker," Toub said. "We are paying Butker. Butker has won a lot of football games for us. Butker is a champion. He deserves the right to be exhausted on this thing. We are going to exhaust every possibility with him."

The 5-2 Chiefs are on a two-game losing streak heading into this weekend's matchup versus the New York Jets. In those two losses, Butker missed two field goals against the Seattle Seahawks and one field goal against the Denver Broncos. Neither one of these games would've had the opposite outcome if Butker had made the field goals as the Chiefs lost by more points than that, but it's not good that Butker continues to miss field goals, pretty far wide too, in important games.

If Butker misses more field goals this weekend, then the Chiefs' coaching staff may have different opinions about him next week.
