In less than two weeks, the Cleveland Browns have introduced a proposal for a rule change that would allow NFL teams to trade five picks into the future, and then reworked Myles Garrett's mammoth contract to push his bonus dates by six months.

That doesn't sound like a coincidence, and as much as the Browns are saying all the right things about them wanting to keep Garrett, that's also what they said about Baker Mayfield right before trading for Deshaun Watson.

With that in mind, some insiders like Tony Grossi believe that team owner Jimmy Haslam might be playing chess, not checkers. And even though he may not have any interest in trading Garrett now, he could change his mind for a chance to get Arch Manning:

“If you’re Haslam, you have your eye on Arch Manning, no doubt,” Grossi said on ESPN Cleveland. “I also have to keep pointing out that I don't see how anybody can pry Arch Manning from the New York Jets, who are stocked already with three No. 1s in 2027 and have a worse roster than the Browns, and are likely to be finishing 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in the bottom draft order.”

Texas Longhorns quarterback Arch Manning.

Of course, that doesn't mean the Browns will trade Garrett. As Grossi said, the New York Jets are in a position to outbid almost anybody for the No. 1 pick, assuming they don't finish the season with the worst record, as projected.

Moreover, it's not like the Texas star is the only high-end prospect entering the league next season. The class of 2027 is stacked with potential stars like Dante Moore, Julian Sayin, DJ Lagway, LaNorris Sellers, among others.

So, even if things don't work out with Shedeur Sanders, the Browns should still be in a prime position to find their franchise quarterback sooner rather than later without having to give up on the best defensive player of his generation.
