Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick was one of the NFL’s budding stars back in the mid-2010s.

The Nevada alum led the 49ers to the Super Bowl in 2012 and the NFC Championship Game the following season, but just three years later, he was out of the league altogether.

Kaepernick inadvertently derailed his NFL career during the 49ers’ preseason finale against the then-San Diego Chargers when he kneeled during the national anthem in protest of what he called racial injustice in the United States.

Kaepernick’s statement was meant to be a rallying cry for unity, but it’s the very thing that ultimately ended his football career.

He played just 12 games for the 49ers that season and was released in the offseason. And despite several NFL comeback attempts, no team has given the former second-round pick a second chance.

At 38, it appears Kaepernick’s NFL comeback hopes are all but gone. However, the once heralded passer seems to be committed to his new career as he announced the release of his upcoming book on social media.

“What would you sacrifice for what you believe in?” Kaepernick asked on X. “I gave up everything. And I'd do it again. THE PERILOUS FIGHT is the full story. The becoming, the moment, and what's still left to fight for.

“The world has been telling my story for ten years. It's my turn. THE PERILOUS FIGHT. September 15, 2026. Order now at the link in my bio.”

The book will be the fifth Kaepernick has published as an author, joining “I Color Myself Different,” “Change the Game: A Graphic Novel,” “We Are Free, You and Me,” and “Different.”

The book will be published by the Legacy Lit publishing company.

“In ‘The Perilous Fight,’ Kaepernick delivers his story with the same unflinching conviction that defined the moment the world watched,” Legacy Lit wrote on its website. “Equal parts memoir and manifesto, it traces the off-the-field battles that turned a single act of protest into a movement that changed American sports and culture forever.”
