The Dallas Cowboys fell to the division-rival New York Giants in their season opener on Sunday night, sparking concerns regarding their expectations moving forward.

The Giants came out on top with a 28-20 final score. New York quarterback Jaxson Dart out-dueled Cowboys signal caller Dak Prescott, completing 23 of his 29 pass attempts for 230 yards and three touchdowns.

The Cowboys entered the 2026 season with high expectations, particularly when it came to improvements on the defensive side of the ball. However, Sunday night looked like more of the same for Dallas — except the electrifying offense that lit up the league in 2025 was nowhere to be found.

“I’m still optimistic,” Prescott said, via team insider Jon Machota of The Athletic. “That doesn’t change our goals. It doesn’t change how we feel about our team. This is a marathon. It’s a long season. We’re going to respond.”

Prescott threw a costly interception with the score tied 7-7 near the end of the first half. The Giants capitalized with a go-ahead touchdown before the break.

“That was crucial,” Prescott said. “I was trying to throw the ball away. The guy made a hell of a play. I got to make sure that it’s out of bounds, though. I was surprised. It’s one I want back, obviously. I think that was a huge point in the game.”
