The Buffalo Bills lost a gut-wrenching matchup against the Denver Broncos over the weekend, 33‑30, officially eliminating them from the NFL postseason for the seventh consecutive year.

Following the loss, the Bills made the decision on Monday to fire head coach Sean McDermott. McDermott, who took over the role in 2017, has been the driving force behind the franchise’s resurgence, winning five AFC East titles and compiling a 98‑50 regular season record. However, he went just 8‑8 in postseason games.

Not long after the news became public, one of the team’s popular players, safety Damar Hamlin, reacted to McDermott’s departure. Hamlin has only played under McDermott since being drafted by the organization in 2021, making the news particularly significant for him.

McDermott has played a significant role in Hamlin’s development since coming out of college and was a key figure in handling the near-tragic incident on Jan. 2, 2023, when Hamlin collapsed on the field during a "Monday Night Football" game against the Cincinnati Bengals, suffering cardiac arrest.

While Hamlin was ultimately stabilized by the trainers and doctors at the local Cincinnati hospital, McDermott managed the situation as well as any coach could, choosing not to send his players back onto the field and leading his team with professionalism.

Hamlin ultimately returned to football later that year, playing in a preseason game in August 2023, and has since remained a member of the Bills’ defense.
