Given the way the 2025 season went for J.J. McCarthy, few can blame the Minnesota Vikings for exploring the quarterback market.
The team is believed to be interested in bringing back veteran Carson Wentz, who started five games for the team this season, and the Vikings have also been heavily linked to former Arizona Cardinals QB Kyler Murray, who has been informed he’ll be released when the new league year begins next week.
Murray, a former Offensive Rookie of the Year and two-time Pro Bowler, is only 28 and presumably isn’t looking for a place he can go just to retire.

The former No. 1 overall pick threw for 20,460 yards, 121 touchdowns, and 60 interceptions in his career while rushing for another 3,193 yards and 32 more scores. If Minnesota is serious about bringing him onto the roster, ESPN’s Louis Riddick believes it spells bad news for the 23-year-old McCarthy.
“Kyler Murray is not a bridge quarterback; that’s not why you’re signing him,” Riddick said on “Get Up” on Wednesday. “You’re signing him to mentor a young quarterback that you already have in your quarterback room. … This is a guy who has a ton of runway left in his career, provided he can stay healthy.
“For (Murray) to go to Minnesota, what Kevin O’Connell is telling you is that J.J. McCarthy’s days in Minnesota, to me, are over.”

Despite his 6-4 record as a starter this season, McCarthy’s numbers left much to be desired. He put up a pedestrian 72.6 passer rating while throwing for 1,632 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. He was also sacked 27 times.
Some believe the Vikings are looking for a veteran to come in and push McCarthy to be better, however, the signs seem to be pointing toward the team looking to push McCarthy out the door.
