The Cleveland Browns faced a pre-training camp setback on Thursday over a player who was fresh off a career year.
Cleveland added defensive tackle Maliek Collins to the physically unable to perform list on Thursday, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported. Collins had a career-best 6.5 sacks in 12 games last season, which will make him a significant loss for the Browns.
He sustained a quad injury against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 13 last year. Before the season-ending injury, Collins had 25 tackles with seven tackles for loss, and he had 13 quarterback hits. Collins made the Pro Bowl in the process.

While Collins could be back for Week 1, his presence on the PUP list indicates there's more time ahead for him on the sidelines. The PUP list during training camp allows for a player to return to practice at any point.
If Collins stays on the PUP list past training camp, he will miss the first four games of the regular season. For the Browns' current state based on recent seasons, that might not be the end of the world.
Cleveland is expected to be more of a candidate for a top draft pick than a playoff team. The Browns could be in the running for Texas quarterback Arch Manning or Oregon quarterback Dante Moore, though Cleveland has a total logjam in the quarterback room.
That being said, it's a big season for Collins to get back on the field and perform since he is in a contract year. He has a two-year, $20 million deal with the Browns, and Cleveland will likely need to win games this year for him to be motivated to stay.
After all, the Browns already lost star defensive end Myles Garrett in a trade this offseason to the Los Angeles Rams. Garrett had been dissatisfied with the Browns' on-field performance for years, and Collins could follow suit after this season, depending on how things play out.
