The Dallas Cowboys enter the final week of the NFL regular season at 7-8-1, having missed the playoffs for a second straight year.

Despite the disappointment, owner Jerry Jones highlighted several positives from the season, including an offense that ranks fourth in the league, averaging 28.4 points per game, and praised offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer during an appearance on 105.3 The Fan on Tuesday.

Still, Jones made one urgent promise to Cowboys fans regarding the team’s struggles on defense. “We will get better on defense, I promise you that,” he said.

The Cowboys allowed 6,029 total yards this season, averaging 376.8 yards per game, ranking third-worst in the NFL ahead of only the Washington Commanders and Cincinnati Bengals.

Even more concerning, Dallas gave up the most points in the league, allowing 29.8 points per game. The second-worst team, the Bengals, gave up 29.5 points per game. While these numbers could shift slightly after Week 18, the primary issue this season has clearly been on the defensive side of the ball.

First-year defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus faced scrutiny, though Jerry Jones stressed the problem was not solely his responsibility. “That's a team-wide breakdown for us not to play better defense. Not an Eberflus breakdown, per se,” Jones said.
