The 2026 NFL season hasn't been memorable for Lamar Jackson.

Baltimore Ravens head coach Jesse Minter announced that Jackson will have surgery on the thumb he injured during the game against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. Minter also said that the team will place Jackson on injured reserve.

Jackson suffered a right thumb injury on the first play of Sunday's game. The two-time NFL MVP was attempting a pass when Bills linebacker Greg Rousseau struck his right hand while trying to defend the pass.

After Jackson went down, backup quarterback Tyler Huntley left the game with a right toe injury in the second quarter. No. 3 QB Joe Fagnano, an undrafted rookie from Connecticut, finished the game and completed 10-of-21 passes for 91 yards and an interception.

Lamar Jackson Had a Strong Start to the 2026 Season

Jackson returned to action after missing the last three games with an ankle injury. During that span, the Ravens went 1-2, and the only victory was an overtime win against the Atlanta Falcons.

"I'm excited," Jackson said earlier this week, per Ryan Mink of BaltimoreRavens.com. "I'm always excited when I'm able to be back on the field with my guys. Put us in the win column, help us get another dub. That's what I'm ready to do."

Before missing the last three games, Jackson led the Ravens to a 3-1 record and completed 70.8% of his passes for 967 yards, six touchdowns, and one interception.

"When we are out there playing football, I'm not thinking about trying to manage anything," Jackson said. "I'm trying to win, so we are going out there to play football."
