The New England Patriots released veteran wide receiver Stefon Diggs before the start of NFL free agency. The move saved the Patriots from committing another $6 million that was guaranteed to the receiver next season.

However, that doesn’t mean Diggs won’t be running it back with the team that helped him reach his first Super Bowl in his career. Patriots executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf spoke with the media on Thursday and didn’t completely rule out a situation where the Patriots re-sign Diggs this offseason.

"We’re always looking for ways to improve the team, so I’m not going to say that anything’s final at any position on the roster," Wolf said. "We wish Stefon the best. He was a tremendous player for us all season. I feel like wherever he goes next, if it’s elsewhere, if he comes back here, he’s gonna have a tremendous season."

The main reason for cutting Diggs was to save money before free agency, but it might not have been the only reason he was let go. Wolf explained the decision to release Diggs came down to “a variety of factors,” including financials and overall ability.

Even at 32 years old last season, Diggs led the Patriots with 85 catches for 1,013 yards and four touchdowns, appearing in all 17 games. He was a huge reason why quarterback Drake Maye took a step that led to him being involved in MVP discussions throughout the season.

So, ability may not be the biggest concern. Diggs does have some public issues off the field, but the Patriots were definitely a better team with him.

In free agency, the Patriots have already signed former Packers receiver Romeo Doubs as the likely replacement for Diggs. The team has also been closely linked to Eagles star wideout A.J. Brown in trade rumors, but no deal has come together just yet.
