The New England Patriots have been circling the wide receiver market this offseason, both on the open market and through trades, and now they have acquired a new top target for rising star quarterback Drake Maye.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports the Patriots agreed to terms with Green Bay Packers’ receiver Romeo Doubs on a four-year deal worth up to $80 million. It’s a massive payday for one of the top receivers available at a young age.
Doubs, 25, will slot in as the top option for Maye next season. He gives the Patriots a vertical threat alongside Kayshon Boutte on the outside. He turned in one of his best seasons as a pro in 2025, hauling in 55 receptions for a career-high 724 yards and six touchdowns.

Even though the addition of Doubs is a significant upgrade, the Patriots have been heavily rumored in trade discussions for disgruntled Philadelphia Eagles star receiver A.J. Brown. This deal doesn’t close the door on a potential trade for Brown, but it doesn’t make the acquisition as pressing as it once was.
Doubs was highly sought after in free agency. He was heavily rumored to join the 49ers before they agreed to terms with superstar wideout Mike Evans.

NFL insider Jordan Schultz reports the Washington Commanders were also heavily involved in Doubs’ decision, but ultimately, the path to winning and becoming a top receiver for Maye, who finished last season as an MVP candidate, was too much to pass on.
After the Patriots released wide receiver Stefon Diggs, Doubs should have the inside track to become the No. 1 option in the offense next season. The Patriots could still make a trade for another receiver or address the position early in the upcoming draft, but for now, it appears to be Doubs’ role to lose.
