The New York Giants sit atop the NFC East coming out of their bye week, but their backfield has been anything but steady.

Running back Cam Skattebo has fumbled four times in the Giants’ first five games — the most costly coming in overtime of a 27-27 tie with the Washington Commanders in Week 5. With New York in field-goal range to win it, Skattebo had the ball punched out at the Washington 24-yard line.

“At the end of the day, I f---ed up,” Skattebo said after the game, owning up to his mistake.

The next week, the second-year back played just six snaps and didn’t get a single carry in a 34-27 loss to the New Orleans Saints, though head coach John Harbaugh denied that Skattebo was being punished.

However, the fumbles may have gotten the attention of the front office too.

According to Fox Sports’ Ralph Vacchiano, while Skattebo built some solid momentum in New York’s 27-21 win over the Houston Texans, in which he rushed for a career-high 124 yards and a touchdown, there’s still some trepidation about trusting him long-term.

New York Giants RB Cam Skattebo

...

"I’ve heard a lot of talk about them and Taylor because Harbaugh is worried about [Cam Skattebo’s] ball security," an anonymous NFL assistant general manager told Vacchiano. "I get it. It would give him his Derrick Henry (who Harbaugh coached in Baltimore). But I think JT’s going to be too expensive.”

It’s not hard to see the appeal of Taylor in Harbaugh’s offense.

Taylor entered Week 8 tied for the league lead in rushing touchdowns (eight) and he was fifth in rushing yards (587), and the Colts, who already traded away Quenton Nelson and DeForest Buckner, have started selling.

But Taylor, who signed a two-year, $44 million extension in August, won’t come cheap. The same assistant GM believes the price will be too expensive for the Giants to pay.

With the Nov. 10 trade deadline approaching, Skattebo has a limited amount of time to convince the Giants front office to keep its limited draft capital and abandon any plans to make a push for Taylor.
