Patrick Mahomes says the quarterback sneak remains an option for the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Chiefs (5-2) are facing renewed questions about the play after their latest goal-line failure.

Speaking to reporters Wednesday, Mahomes said “it's not like we're scared to call the quarterback sneak.” He explained that Kansas City has included sneaks in game plans, with the ability to change the call at the line of scrimmage depending on the defensive front.

That was not the call on the failed third-and-goal handoff to Kenneth Walker against the Denver Broncos. Mahomes said the Chiefs wanted to execute the play they had called, but Denver's movement up front prevented Walker from getting downhill.

Mahomes last ran a traditional quarterback sneak on Oct. 17, 2019, when he dislocated his kneecap against Denver and subsequently missed two games. Since then, Kansas City has put other players, including tight ends, under center for short-yardage attempts.

“I'm going to do whatever it takes to win,” Mahomes said Wednesday.

He also said he did not believe head coach Andy Reid had imposed a ban on running the sneak, noting the Chiefs' success with other plays and Reid's willingness to adjust.

Kansas City lost 28-24 after reaching Denver's 1-yard line on its final possession. An apparent fourth-down touchdown pass to Rashee Rice was wiped out by a false start, and Mahomes was sacked on the final play.

The Chiefs had led by 11 points with less than nine minutes remaining. They also committed 11 penalties for 105 yards, helping Denver stay in a game in which Mahomes threw for 321 yards and three touchdowns.

Mahomes said Kansas City's short-yardage execution has slipped this season. He emphasized better communication and greater physicality, with every player understanding the defense and executing their assignment.

The loss was Kansas City's second straight after a 5-0 start. The Chiefs return to Arrowhead Stadium to face the New York Jets on Sunday.
