The New England Patriots parted ways with Stefon Diggs early in the offseason. They replaced him with former Green Bay Packers star WR Romeo Doubs, getting younger and cheaper.

Even so, they're still tied with a move for Philadelphia Eagles star AJ Brown. The Eagles have been reluctant to move Brown, and with the Patriots' clear need for another established pass catcher, they may have to pivot to another veteran.

With that in mind, Gary Davenport of Bleacher Report made a case for Mike Vrabel's team making a run at Deebo Samuel:

"However, even with Doubs in New England the Patriots could stand to add another pass-catcher with Stefon Diggs' time with the team seemingly over. Eighth-year veteran Deebo Samuel is an interesting fit," Davenport wrote. "... His versatility should appeal to Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels."

Samuel is no longer in his prime, and expecting him to get ten carries and catch ten passes a game simply isn't realistic at this point in his career. That said, he was healthy last season, seemed to be in better shape, and was productive as a pass catcher and ball-carrier despite Jayden Daniels missing several games with injuries.

Spotrac projects his market value at $15.8 million per year. Nevertheless, the lack of potential suitors might help the Patriots get him at a discount.

The Patriots' continuous pursuit of Brown makes sense, and he'd admittedly be an upgrade over Samuel, Doubs, and Diggs. Then again, Eagles GM Howie Roseman seems adamant to keep him in the City of Brotherly Love.

And with no deal imminent before June 1 due to his contract, the Patriots may not want to sit tight. They know options are scarce, and waiting until after the NFL Draft to make another addition to the wide receiver room could leave them empty-handed.
