The San Francisco 49ers started the week with a rough practice, but the offense is finally starting to click. Quarterback Brock Purdy followed a near-perfect outing Wednesday with another strong practice Thursday, hitting 11 of 14 passes, including two deep touchdown throws and a tight completion to Deebo Samuel over the middle.
After practice, new 49ers defensive coordinator Raheem Morris — the former Atlanta Falcons head coach — raved about Purdy, coining him the "Layer King" for his elite accuracy.
"The 'Layer King' has some really intensive intensity and I like that about him," Morris said. "Today he got fired up, which was cool, which was fun, which is competitive. And I love that. And when he does those things, it just makes the team go."

Purdy has been one of the NFL's best stories over the last few years. The last pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, he's since evolved into one of the league's best quarterbacks. Through four seasons with the 49ers, he's racked up 11,685 passing yards and 84 passing touchdowns, completing 67.9% of his passes, while adding 627 rushing yards and 11 rushing touchdowns on the ground.
In 2023, he led the league with a 113.0 passer rating, throwing for 4,280 yards (fifth-most in the NFL), 31 touchdowns, and just 11 interceptions, while completing 69.4% of his passes. He earned his first Pro Bowl nod that year, and in May 2025, the 49ers rewarded him with a five-year, $265 million extension, including $181 million guaranteed, making him one of the highest-paid players in the NFL.
Looking ahead to 2026, Purdy is set up for his best season yet. All-Pro tight end George Kittle is still working his way back from a torn Achilles, but the 49ers bolstered the receiving corps with Samuel, future Hall of Famer Mike Evans, and established field-stretcher Christian Kirk. They also added Ole Miss product De'Zhaun Stribling in the second round of the draft.
