Aaron Donald potentially returning to the NFL two years after retiring has become one of the biggest storylines of the summer.

Rumors picked up steam after video surfaced of Donald working out at the Los Angeles Rams facility a few weeks ago, and since then, insiders have confirmed that he's now seriously considering a comeback.

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported shortly after the workout video emerged that Donald hasn't made any decision, but the door is open. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport recently said that Donald himself "does not really know" if it'll happen and is testing whether he can get back into playing shape before committing to anything.

Sean McVay has made it clear he'd welcome Donald back with open arms. In a recent appearance on "The Daily Flock" podcast, McVay addressed the situation involving the former Rams star as training camp approaches.

"I have crossed paths with Aaron Donald," McVay said. "What's special is, we have a really special relationship. It's way bigger than football. I've heard him say it before, and it means the world to me, and I feel the same, it's family with us. He's done so much for me. I love the man he is. I love the husband, the father, the son, he represents a lot of the things that are right."

"What he's going to do is, he is thinking about this. He's going to go through his process. And the one thing about Aaron Donald is, what he does, he does it full speed ahead."

When Donald walked away in 2024, he had already cemented himself as arguably the most dominant defensive tackle in NFL history. He had won three Defensive Player of the Year awards, eight first-team All-Pro honors, 10 Pro Bowl nods, and a Super Bowl ring in 2022 with the Rams. He holds 111 career sacks, the second-most all-time by a defensive tackle.

There remains no clear timeline as to when Donald is expected to make his decision, and recent reports suggest it may not come until deep into training camp, or even at some point during the regular season.

Los Angeles pulled off one of the biggest trades in NFL history this offseason, acquiring two-time Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett from the Cleveland Browns. That move has already made them one of the top Super Bowl picks this season, and adding Donald to that defense would make it hard to imagine any other team lifting the Lombardi Trophy come February.
