The Pittsburgh Steelers have no shortage of stars, obviously. But when it comes to the team's most important non-quarterback heading into the 2026 season, the debate doesn't last very long.

It's T.J. Watt.

For nearly a decade, Watt has been the player opposing coaches spend the most time trying to stop. Every game plan begins with finding ways to slow him down, and even then, he usually finds a way to make his presence felt. He's unstoppable.

That's what separates elite players from everyone else.

Watt isn't just a pass rusher chasing sacks. He's the engine that drives Pittsburgh's entire defense. Every time. His relentless pressure forces quarterbacks into snap decisions they regret and creates openings for teammates.

His impact goes well beyond the stat sheet. Not that the sheet looks bad.

Over the course of his career, Watt has piled up well over 100 sacks while consistently ranking among the league's leaders in quarterback pressures, forced fumbles and game-changing plays. Those numbers explain why he's regularly in the Defensive Player of the Year ranks.

When Watt is on the field, everything changes. Teams have to rework their whole approach. Few defenders in football command that level of respect.

The Steelers certainly have other cornerstone players. Minkah Fitzpatrick remains one of the NFL's smartest safeties, while Cameron Heyward continues to provide leadership and toughness along the defensive line. On offense, the emergence of young playmakers has given Pittsburgh reasons to believe, and hope, brighter days are ahead.

Still, everything starts with Watt.

The Steelers have built their identity around physical, aggressive defense for generations, and Watt has become the latest face of that tradition. He sets the tone before the opening kickoff.

Quarterbacks will always dominate the headlines, but no non-quarterback means more to Pittsburgh's success than T.J. Watt.
