Since 1969, the Pittsburgh Steelers have only had three men lead their franchise as head coach.
For the past few weeks, that spot has been empty, with 19-year veteran Mike Tomlin stepping down from the role following the team's blowout loss to the Houston Texans to open up the NFL playoffs.
After numerous interviews and inquiries across the league, from young prodigies to wily veterans, it appears the Steelers are nearing the finalization of their fourth strategic leader since the moon landing.

More news: Steelers May Have Found Their Next Head Coach Prodigy: Report
Former Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy is expected to be named the new Steelers head coach, per multiple reports.
It will be a departure from how the Pittsburgh organization has generally hired its new leaders. The past three head coaches were all signed when they were in their 30s and had a runway to coach the team for over a decade.
McCarthy, 62, is almost twice the age of the previous men the Steelers chose to lead their teams. Instead of picking someone entering their first head-coaching role, they are picking a veteran, hoping he can maintain Tomlin's consistency and find a way to win in the postseason.
It also throws an interesting wrench into the Steelers' QB dilemma, as current starter Aaron Rodgers appeared out the door following Tomlin's exit. Now that his former head coach in Green Bay is installed, it could be a factor in his re-signing with the Steelers, depending on the pair's current relationship.
As a Packer, McCarthy won 135 games, including postseason, during which he and Rodgers beat the Steelers to win Super Bowl 15 years ago.
On the Cowboys, he had less success in the playoffs, winning only a single game, but was still a force in the regular season, posting an overall record of 49-35.
