Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud’s strong start to his career merits a new contract, but he’s not dwelling on that.
It’s on the Texans’ radar since he is heading toward his fifth-year option for 2027. Stroud acknowledged the discussions with Texans general manager Nick Caserio, but the former Ohio State star didn’t go into any other details.
“I think everything has been great,” Stroud told reporters on Wednesday. “I’m focused on ball. I’m trying to hold my end of the bargain down on just the football side and do what I can and what I should be doing as the quarterback of this team.”

“I’m letting them handle it, and seems like everything is going great,” Stroud added.

...
Stroud has a four-year, $36.27 million rookie contract, and the fifth-year option would pay him $25.9 million next year. He could command $51.6 million annually or the equivalent of a three-year, $154.82 million deal, based on Spotrac’s estimate.
Houston’s salary cap situation for 2027 doesn’t look great with a projected $43.74 million over the salary cap. That said, NFL general managers have a knack for affording franchise quarterbacks.
Caserio can’t afford to let Stroud walk in the foreseeable future, and realistically, the Texans will get the deal done. Stroud has led the Texans every season of his career thus far with a 28-18 career record. He has completed 63.8% of his passes for 10,876 yards and 62 touchdowns versus 25 interceptions.
Stroud has the Texans on the franchise’s most-successful run in franchise history with three consecutive double-digit win seasons. The Texans are expecting more of the same from Stroud this season.
“What I’ve done is what I’ve done on the field and what I will do, we’ll see,” Stroud said. “I think I’ve had some success and I think I’ll continue to have success as a quarterback in this league.”
