Training camp is officially underway for several NFL teams while others will be easing into camp throughout the next week.

The Arizona Cardinals and Carolina Panthers kick off the 2026 preseason with their Hall of Fame Game clash on Thursday, Aug. 6 on NBC, and Week 1 of the preseason officially kicks off the following week on Aug. 13.

As we count down the days until the start of the NFL regular season — which kicks off with a Super Bowl LX rematch between the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots on “Sunday Night Football” on Sept. 9 — we continue to look at key offseason storylines for each of the league’s 32 teams.

This week, we’re looking as the players most in danger of being cut during the preseason, and we’ve arrived at the Dallas Cowboys.

Joe Milton, QB

Clearly the Cowboys aren’t sold on Milton as a viable backup to Dak Prescott, or else they wouldn’t have felt the need to sign Sam Howell during free agency. Milton has a cannon for an arm, but there are still questions about his accuracy and decision making that likely prompted Dallas to explore other options.

It’s possible the Cowboys keep three QBs on their roster (they did last year with Prescott, Milton, and Will Grier), but it seems unlikely. And between the two, Howell has more experience and would likely win more games in a relief role should Prescott get hurt.

Dallas Cowboys WR Jonathan Mingo

...

Jonathan Mingo, WR

Mingo showed some flashes as a rookie with the Carolina Panthers back in 2023, recording 43 catches for 418 yards. He lasted just a half season longer there before being jettisoned to the Cowboys in 2024.

But in his one-and-a-half year stint with the club, Mingo hasn’t done anything to justify him keeping a roster spot over another young, hungry wideout. He’s totaled six catches for 71 yards, and with the Cowboys bringing in four rookies — Camden Brown, Jordan Hudson, Anthony Smith, Jaden Smith — it’s likely that Mingo won’t survive cut day.

Marquez Valdes-Scantling, WR

A lot of what was said about Mingo applies to Valdes-Scantling too. But his competition is less from the influx of rookies and more from the established veterans already on the roster — Ryan Flournoy, KaVontae Turpin, and Denzel Mims.

MVS is three years removed from his career year in Kansas City (42 receptions, 687 yards, two touchdowns), and at 31, he may not have much to offer the Cowboys that they can’t get from a younger, cheaper receiver.
