The Kansas City Chiefs won’t be playing in the playoffs this year, which makes Sunday’s Week 18 regular-season finale against the Las Vegas Raiders a special matchup for one main reason: veteran tight end Travis Kelce.

While Kelce has not publicly stated that he plans to retire after this season, the future is uncertain, and retirement seems like a plausible path for the 36-year-old future Hall of Famer.

His contract with the Chiefs expires after this season, making him an unrestricted free agent this offseason. At 36 years old, and with quarterback Patrick Mahomes rehabbing a major knee injury that may sideline him to start next season, Kelce’s future with the team is unclear.

Nonetheless, if this game is his last, it presents a prime opportunity for him to go out on a historic note. Kelce is on the cusp of making NFL history, something he achieved countless times throughout his career.

He needs just 10 receiving yards to become the third tight end ever to surpass 13,000 career yards, and just 57 yards to surpass tight end legend Jason Witten, moving into second place all-time in receiving yards among tight ends.

This season, despite a slight dip in production, Kelce remained one of the most productive players at his position across the league, demonstrating that he is still more than capable of being an impactful NFL player.

However, he also has nothing left to prove, and playing until the wheels fall off is a path many players choose not to take.

His decision is expected to come shortly after the offseason begins, once he has had time to weigh his options and discuss his future with friends and family.
