With the tampering period beginning Monday ahead of the official start of NFL free agency on Wednesday, veteran tight end Travis Kelce appears to have made his final decision on retirement.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Kelce is expected to return for a 14th NFL season. Amid rumors that he might test the market as a soon-to-be unrestricted free agent, those speculations were short-lived, as he is set to return to the Kansas City Chiefs — reportedly turning down significant offers from other teams around the league.

“It’s been a roller coaster for Travis Kelce. He has only played for the Chiefs. A lot of people assumed he’d just come back and sign whatever deal was available,” Rapoport said. “He was expected to get significant interest that likely would’ve put him at the top of the tight end market based on how he played last year. A Pro Bowler, certainly playing near the top of his game.

“But that’s not really what Travis Kelce is about. He is turning down more money to stay in Kansas City, to be loyal, to be with Patrick Mahomes, and to continue having another shot at the Super Bowl.”

Kelce’s deal with the Chiefs is expected to be another one-year contract in the range of $15 million, according to Dianna Russini.

The Chiefs made it clear they wanted Kelce back, and while the team made several moves in recent days to get under the salary cap, there was never much doubt that if Kelce returned, it would be with Kansas City.

Last season, Kelce recorded 75 receptions for 851 yards and five touchdowns. While that marks a slight drop from his peak years, he still ranked among the top five tight ends in receiving yards and remained one of the most productive players at his position in the NFL — even at age 36.
