"WrestleMania 42" was set to feature blockbuster main events, but injuries and storyline changes forced WWE to drastically alter its plans. As the company marches toward Las Vegas, a new report from the Wrestling Observer Newsletter has emerged regarding the original creative directions that never came to fruition. Here are three headline matches that were left on the cutting room floor.
Seth Rollins vs. Roman Reigns

Roman Reigns vs. Cody Rhodes
"The Tribal Chief" and "The American Nightmare" had already clashed in singles matches at "WrestleMania 39" and "WrestleMania 40," with each superstar holding a victory over the other. Speculation grew that the two would meet again to complete the trilogy at "WrestleMania 42," especially while Rhodes held the Undisputed WWE Championship.
Following Rhodes’ unexpected title loss, plans changed significantly. He is now expected to face Drew McIntyre in Las Vegas, while Reigns has pivoted to a massive showdown with CM Punk for the World Heavyweight Championship.
CM Punk vs. Bron Breakker
After CM Punk captured the World Heavyweight Championship in November 2025, early reports indicated he would defend the title against the rising Bron Breakker at "WrestleMania 42." This would have been a "passing of the torch" moment on the grandest stage. Instead, plans changed.
