'Star Wars' Superfan Kevin Smith Raves About 'Episode IX: Rise of Skywalker' Trailer, Hints at His Visit to Set

After a teaser trailer for Star Wars: Episode IX The Rise of Skywalker dropped on Friday, actor and director Kevin Smith raved about the sci-fi franchise's latest installment.

Smith, 48, shared his excitement for Disney's Rise of Skywalker teaser on Twitter. He also hinted that filmmaker J.J. Abrams allowed him to get an early glimpse at the making of the anticipated release.

"SPOILERS! This teaser is elegant and exciting! I got to witness J.J. doing the Lord's work in person and what I saw and heard on #EpisodioIX took me back in time to 1977, 1980 and 1983," the Clerks star tweeted. "Rey's TIE flip, Kylo masking up, and LANDO at last! @starwars Saga is going out Force-fully!"

Smith first opened up about his Episode IX set visit during a Good Morning America appearance back in December 2018. To visit the set, he was required to sign a non-disclosure agreement that prohibited him from revealing confidential information about the film.

While Smith couldn't reveal much to the GMA hosts, the Star Wars megafan revealed that his set visit experience sparked an emotional reaction from him.

"J.J.'s doing the Lord's work. This movie looks fantastic. It's a year away, but man, it looks fantastic," Smith said. "I wept on set because I saw somebody give a career-best performance. Somebody I've seen in these movies before. I rolled a tear, it was so darn powerful. Biggest set I've ever seen in my life. The dude's not directing a movie. It's like he's directing a small country. Like, the thing is so massive."

"I sat there for a week and watched two scenes get filmed. One of them was absolutely amazing. I heard plot details and stuff. [The] movie's going to fantastic," he added.

The teaser first premiered to fans attending an Episode IX panel at the Star Wars Celebration event in Chicago on Friday. The teaser, which clocks in slightly over the two-minute mark, opens with Rey (Daisy Ridley) in the desert as she hears Luke Skywalker's (Mark Hamill) voice in her head, saying: "We've passed on all we know. A thousand generations live in you now. But this is your fight." She soon pulls out a lightsaber and pulls off a staggering aerial flip, leaping onto what appears to be Kylo Ren's TIE Silencer. The trailer also features footage of late actress Carrie Fisher as Leia Organa and teases the possible return of Emperor Palpatine, presumed dead after his duel with Luke all the way back in 1983's Return of the Jedi.

Episode IX is slated to bow on December 20. It's the third installment of the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy, which began with The Force Awakens in 2015. Ridley stars alongside Hamill, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong'o, Adam Driver, Keri Russell, John Boyega, Billy Dee Williams, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran and Richard E. Grant.

Bob Iger, Disney's chief executive officer, announced on Thursday that the mouse house would put Star Wars movies on hold after Episode IX's December debut.

"We have not announced any specific plans for movies thereafter," Iger told Bloomberg Television on Thursday. "There are movies in development, but we have not announced them."

Iger added, "We will take a pause, some time, and reset because the Skywalker saga comes to an end with this ninth movie. There will be other Star Wars movies, but there will be a bit of a hiatus."
