'Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker' Spoilers? Trailer Teases 'Star Wars Rebels' Ghost Appearance

The trailer for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is here, bringing with it plenty of nostalgia and fuzzy warm feelings as fans of the space odyssey prepare to find out how the Skywalker saga will end after nine films spanning over four decades.

There are many tantalizing moments in the trailer for Rise of Skywalker—including Rey and Kylo Ren duelling and then teaming up, the ominous presence of Emperor Palpatine and a tease of Carrie Fisher's final scenes as Princess Leia—but eagle-eyed fans watching the trailer, which premiered Monday night, may have spotted a heck of an Easter egg.

In one fleeting moment as Resistance spacecrafts—led by the Millennium Falcon—fly through space, among the contingent appears to be the Ghost from the Star Wars Rebels animated series.

The starship appears to fly to the right of the Falcon, as you can see below:

The ship certainly looks a lot like the animated Ghost in Star Wars Rebels and fans are convinced that it is, in fact, the Ghost.

In Star Wars Rebels, the Ghost is the starship used by a band of rebels—including pilot Hera Syndulla—as they attempt to undo some of the tyranny of the Galactic Empire.

Rebels, which ran for four seasons on Disney XD between 2014 and 2018, is set after the events of the first three chronological Star Wars films (The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith), but before the events of A New Hope. The series is set against the backdrop of the dark events of Revenge of the Sith—namely the rise of the Galactic Empire and the apparent purge of the Jedi Order.

If that is indeed the Ghost in the Rise of Skywalker trailer, its appearance raises many questions. The events of Rebels take place 14 years after Revenge of the Sith and five years before A New Hope. The events of the new Star Wars trilogy take place some three decades after the events of Return of the Jedi, which means that 35 years—at least—have passed between the Rebels and Rise of Skywalker. Who is piloting the ship? Are any of the characters from Rebels still alive?

This wouldn't be the first time the Ghost has appeared in a live-action Star Wars film, however, because the ship also made a brief cameo in 2016's prequel Rogue One, flying with a fleet of rebel ships.

The Ghost's appearance in Rogue One is much more explainable, however, as its timeline syncs with RebelsRogue One takes place almost immediately before A New Hope.

Before Rogue One's Jyn Erso and company tried to steal plans for the Death Star from the Galactic Empire, it was the crew of the Ghost in Rebels who were trying to thwart Darth Vader's evil order, so the Rebels crew supporting Erso seems to align.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is released on December 20.
