Stephen Colbert Mocks Melania Trump 'Disappearance': 'It Took That 'Shawshank' Guy Years to Tunnel Out'

The Late Show host Stephen Colbert weighed in on Monday on the growing media speculation surrounding first lady Melania Trump and her disappearance from the public eye.

"We saw so much happen over the past week but one thing we did not see was First Lady Melania Trump," Colbert said. "As of the time we're taping the show right now, the first lady has not been seen in public for 25 days."

Melania has not been seen since a May 10 appearance with her husband, President Donald Trump, and her subsequent medical treatment—though a spokesperson said she was "doing great."

Speculation as to the reason for the first lady's absence flared up as it was announced she would not travel with the president to the G7 summit in Canada or to Singapore for the possible meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

On the night Colbert's show was airing, the first lady appeared at an event for Gold Star families at the White House with her husband, but it was closed to press.

"Well, I'm not surprised," Colbert joked about the absence, "it took that Shawshank guy years to tunnel out."

Colbert then noted that when the first lady arrived back in the White House after her medical procedure, President Donald Trump tweeted a welcome in which he accidentally referred to her as 'Melanie.' "Awkward," Colbert said.

"Could you imagine if he called her the wrong name in bed?" Colbert said. "She might hear it from down the hall."

I see the media is working overtime speculating where I am & what I'm doing. Rest assured, I'm here at the @WhiteHouse w my family, feeling great, & working hard on behalf of children & the American people!

In a tweet from the @FLOTUS twitter account, the first lady said, "I see the media is working overtime speculating where I am & what I'm doing. Rest assured, I'm here at the @WhiteHouse w my family, feeling great, & working hard on behalf of children & the American people!"

At the time, many joked that the tweet did not sound like it was written by the first lady. "I have my doubts that Melania wrote that," Colbert commented, "for one thing, Michelle Obama never said it in a speech."

Colbert later joked that the White House had released an official photo of her attending Monday night's event before cutting to, well, the picture the show posted below.

Melania supposedly re-emerged to attend an event in the White House tonight, but who can be sure? Because the event was closed to the press. But the White House did release this official photo proving the First Lady was totally there. #LSSC pic.twitter.com/OXrFbRwEfN
