Americans are welcoming the arrival of freshly issued stimulus payments, worth up to $1,400.

Why It Matters

An estimated 1 million Americans will be getting a financial boost from the IRS for previously unpaid stimulus, officially known as Economic Impact Payments (EIP). While these were originally intended to help Americans during the COVID pandemic, delayed payments of up to $1,400 could provide a much welcome financial boost after Christmas.

What to Know

The new payments, Recovery Rebate Credit (RRC), are being sent to eligible taxpayers who did not claim federal stimulus checks they were entitled to on tax returns for 2021.

"Qualified taxpayers are those who filed a 2021 tax return, but where the data field for the Recovery Rebate Credit was left blank or was filled out as $0 when the taxpayer was actually eligible for the credit," the IRS said, announcing the update last month.

The COVID-era payments, first issued four years ago, were sent out late December and "should arrive in most cases by late January 2025," the IRS added.

X, formerly Twitter, users have posted about receiving their stimulus payments this month.

User Rishab wrote on January 8: "Bruh I just got a stimulus check in the mail because I never got one during COVID lmao. I'll def take it."

Another user, Stoogie, shared on January 2 a photo of a letter marked "Not a bill or an advertisement," writing: "It is 2025 and I just got a COVID stimulus check in the mail."

ISA asked X that same day: "Anybody else get a stimulus check recently cus I just got one outta nowhere."

Payments are automatically deposited into bank accounts or sent by paper check, and recipients will also receive a separate letter regarding the payment.

What People Are Saying

IRS commissioner Danny Werfel, in a statement issued in December 2024: "The IRS continues to work hard to make improvements and help taxpayers. These payments are an example of our commitment to go the extra mile for taxpayers. Looking at our internal data, we realized that one million taxpayers overlooked claiming this complex credit when they were actually eligible.

"To minimize headaches and get this money to eligible taxpayers, we're making these payments automatic, meaning these people will not be required to go through the extensive process of filing an amended return to receive it."

What's Next

The IRS has also reminded taxpayers who have not yet filed their 2021 tax returns that they may still be eligible for a refund if they file and claim the RRC by April 15, 2025.

The IRS said that a tax return is essential to getting the credit, "even if their income from a job, business or other source was minimal or non-existent" at the time.
