Why Haven't I Received My Stimulus Check?

By now, tens of millions of eligible Americans have received their stimulus checks from the government as a part of a $2 trillion relief package from the coronavirus outbreak.

However, there are still an estimated 60 to 70 million people who are waiting for their check of up to $1,200 per adult and $500 for eligible children to appear.

There are many reasons why your check may not have arrived if you are eligible to receive one. One simple explanation is that it has yet to be processed as the International Revenue Service deals with the huge backlog of payments.

Around 150 million Americans are eligible to receive the stimulus check, guaranteeing it won't be a quick process to sort through them all.

At the minute, the IRS is only processing those who chose to have their checks paid via direct deposit. This was an option for those filing their tax returns in 2018 or 2019.

Many who have already received their checks had filed their returns for either of the two years and chose this option, meaning no further action was required from them as the IRS already had their relevant information.

The IRS did launch the free "Get My Payment" app in order to help those who filed their tax return in 2018 or 2019, but did not approve direct deposit. Using the app, filers can now request a direct deposit instead of getting a check sent in the mail.

The free app will also allow taxpayers to track the status of their payment if they have not yet received it.

For those who requested to have their check sent by mail, the only thing to do now is wait for it to arrive in the post. Unfortunately, this could take a while.

"That process of printing and stuffing those checks is going to take many weeks, and the estimate I've seen is that it will take about four to five months," David Wilcox, from the Peterson Institute for International Economics, told WFSB.

Another reason you may not have received your payment is that the IRS does not have your details on hand because you have not filed a tax return for 2018 or 2019.

In order to help with this, the IRS launched an online tool for those not required to file tax returns, such as senior citizens and those who earn less than $12,000, so they can still register to receive the payment. From there, people can chose to have the money paid directly into their accounts.

The IRS have said they will automatically send the stimulus check to those who receive Social Security retirement, disability or survivor benefits, as well as Railroad Retirement benefits.

Another reason people may not have their check yet is that the IRS does not have their relevant bank information, even if they filed their tax returns online.

Those who used popular services such as popular services like H&R Block and TurboTax may still be waiting for their money as the IRS didn't have their direct deposit information on file.

The IRS told The Washington Post that they are aware of the issue and urged people to input their bank information on the Get My Payment portal.

Others have warned that the check may be sent to an old bank account, especially those who did not file a tax return in 2019 as the IRS would have used information from your 2018 return. People are being urged to check any details via the Get My Payment Page to amend this.
