Super Bowl Odds 2020: Chiefs Open as Early Favorite to Defeat 49ers in Super Bowl LIV

The Kansas City Chiefs have opened as slight favorites to defeat the San Francisco 49ers when the two teams meet in Super Bowl LIV in Miami, Florida, on February 2.

The Chiefs will play for the Lombardi Trophy for the first time in 51 years after beating the Tennessee Titans 35-24 in the AFC Championship Game on Sunday. The 49ers return to the Super Bowl for the first time since 2013 after steamrolling the Green Bay Packers 37-20 in the NFC Championship Game.

According to Oddschecker, the Chiefs are a 1.5-point favorite over the 49ers and are 19/20 to cover the spread, while the 49ers are 21/20 underdogs.

According to ESPN Stats & Information's line archive, only four Super Bowls have had a spread smaller than two.

The Chiefs are a league-best 12-5-1 against the spread this season, covering the spread on 70.6 percent of occasions and covering by an average of 4.6 points per game.

Kansas City is 10-4-1 against the spread as favorite, which is also the best record in the NFL this season. San Francisco, meanwhile, is 11-6-1 against the spread, the fourth-best record in the league and a perfect 5-0-0 as the underdog.

In the history of the Super Bowl, the favorite team has lifted the Lombardi Trophy on 34 of 53 occasions, but teams that began as favorites by three points or less are only 8-7.

Meanwhile, the over/under line in terms of total points scored opened at 51.5 and has since grown to 52.5 at the time of writing.

During the regular season, the 49ers and the Chiefs ranked second and fifth in the NFL in terms of points per game, scoring an average of 29.9 and 28.2 points per game respectively. Both figures have increased through the first two playoff games both teams have played, with the 49ers scoring an average of 32 points, while the Chiefs have put up a jaw-dropping 43 points per game.

Fifty percent of the 24 Super Bowls played since San Francisco last lifted the Lombardi Trophy in 1995 have seen at least 50 points scored and the Super Bowl has averaged 44.8 points per game in the last decade.

Kansas City began the season with the shortest odds of any team aside from the Patriots, but their chances had almost halved by the time they arrived in Week 9 with a 6-3 record.

However, after losing to the Titans the following week, the Chiefs won their final six regular season games to pip the Patriots to second spot in the AFC.

San Francisco, meanwhile, began the season as a 5/1 outsider to win a first divisional title since 2012 after going 4-12 in 2018 and were a 40/1 shot to win a first Lombardi Trophy since 1995.
