Moment Taylor Hawkins Greeted Young Drummer Fan Outside Hotel Goes Viral

Video of Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins meeting a star-struck young fan only days before he died has gone viral. On Friday, the band announced the death of Hawkins at the age of 50 in Bogotá, Colombia.

On Tuesday, as part of its South American tour, the band performed in Paraguay's capital Asunción. Emma Sofía Peralta, 9 years old, is a keen drummer and she waited outside the hotel the band was staying in for a glimpse of her idol.

To get his attention, she set up a drum kit outside the Sheraton and played for an hour egged on by an enthusiastic crowd, her father explained on a Twitter post. The video that shows Hawkins looking at what the fuss was all about and going up to meet the girl as the crowd cheered.

He then posed for a photo with her which was widely shared on Instagram and Twitter.

Her father, posting under the Twitter handle Julius, tweeted video of her meeting Hawkins in a clip which as of Saturday morning had been viewed more than 930,000 times.

"Since my daughter found out that Foo Fighters were coming, she started a campaign to meet them," he wrote in a separate post of a still image of them.

"Today we took her drums to play in front of the Sheraton and look who came out at her call. Dreams come true."

In a follow-up post on Saturday, he suggested that his daughter did not know of Hawkins' passing, as he tweeted: "We are devastated. I don't know how to tell this to Emma."

Other musicians paid tributes to Hawkins whose cause of death has not yet been revealed.

The singer Ozzy Osbourne praised Hawkins as a "great person and an amazing musician" tweeting: "My heart, my love and my condolences go out to his wife, his children, his family, his band and his fans."

Ex-Beatles drummer Ringo Starr also expressed his condolences and tweeted: "God bless Taylor. Peace and love to all his family and the band peace and love."

Hawkins played with the Foo Fighters for more than two decades, joining after they their 1997 album The Colour and the Shape.

Hawkins was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame by Paul McCartney with Foo Fighters in 2021.

"His musical spirit and infectious laughter will live with us forever," Foo Fighters said in a statement.

The band had been scheduled to perform at Festival Estéreo Picnic in Bogotá, Colombia on Friday night but announced that it would not be performing.
