Considered a hallowed hallmark of British culture, the Glastonbury Festival is a yearly summer music festival that is held across five days in Pilton, a village that is part of Somerset in southwestern England. According to the festival's website, it was first held in 1970, the day after rock star Jimi Hendrix died in London. That year, admission cost only a single pound, and the 1,500 attendees were also given free milk from Worthy Farm. A poster for the 1970 festival advertised such performers as the Kinks and Wayne Fontana.
In the near half-century since, Glastonbury has ballooned to a massive festival. In 2019, 203,000 tickets were sold for 248 pounds (about 330 U.S. dollars). Performers at the 2019 festival included Janet Jackson, Miley Cyrus and Lizzo.
According to the Guardian, only five solo female artists have headlined the festival before Swift. The upcoming Glastonbury will be Swift's debut at the festival. Further, Swift will be the first female performer to headline since Adele's appearance in 2016.
The 2020 Glastonbury Festival will take place between Friday, June 24 and Sunday, June 28 in Pilton. The festival's website read that Paul McCartney will also headline the festival on June 27. Diana Ross will play during the Sunday teatime slot on the Pyramid Stage on June 28. Tickets for the next year's event have been sold out, according to the website.
Swift was recently honored with the Woman of the Decade Award from Billboard last Thursday.
