Industry standard Digidesign offers the Pro Tools LE 003 line, available soon in version 8. Perfect for beginners, it features more than 60 sound plug-ins for music-making, and is now formatted for PCs as well as Macs ($1,295 to $2,495; digidesign.com).

Apple's Logic Studio can create and record music, as well as perform it via laptop onstage. For Macs alone, Logic comes with Apple programs like Apple Loops for sound sampling, MainStage for live shows and Soundtrack Pro for video matchup (from $499; apple.com). Ableton Suite is a multitasking workstation for music creation, production and performance. Mac and PC compatible, Suite includes Ableton's signature Live 7 for producing and performing, sound plug-ins, a music sampler and digital drum machines. The software is sold as a boxed version or an instantly gratifying download ($799 to $999; ableton.com). Now who's got the beat?
